First
Connection (Peer-to-Peer) Program
Recognizing
the needs of patients in the initial phases of diagnosis, the First
Connection program provides a phone call or visit to a newly diagnosed
patient by a patient in remission. This unique match gives the patient
something that no one else can: a firsthand look at having "been
there." The patient will be matched with a peer for age,
diagnosis and gender when possible. Peers will be trained in basic
counseling skills and armed with local resource materials so that
patients need not feel isolated as they begin the process of
treatment. Anyone with lymphoma or related cancers is eligible to
receive a call or visit. There is no charge for this program. To
become a peer volunteer, you should meet the following criteria:
a) Have an interest
and commitment to helping others; b) Be screened by the Chapter for
the program; c) Participate
in all training provided by the chapter. For more information, visit leukemia-lymphoma.org
